Lenol: Steering Marine Sustainability Through Innovation and Impact

At the intersection of marine trade and sustainability, Lenol is redefining what it means to be a responsible oil marketer. With operations spanning over 900 ports globally, Lenol’s approach to lubricant trading is rooted in environmental stewardship, social accountability, and transparent governance—a model increasingly recognized in global sustainability forums.

In 2024, Lenol’s ESG strides were not just ambitions—they were actions. From the introduction of ULSFO-compatible lubricants like CLX 20 to the launch of biodegradable marine oils tailored for emission control areas, Lenol’s R&D partnership with FUCHS Germany exemplifies how innovation can accelerate climate goals. Moreover, Lenol’s leadership on the global stage—evident through sponsorships, technical seminars, and a growing portfolio of sustainable offerings—demonstrates a clear purpose: to shape a climate-resilient, ethical, and inclusive future for marine logistics. International Ship Engineering Service

ISES is essentially a non-profit enterprise that exists to co-ordinate and market the international activities of its member companies. The objective of ISES is to unite an independent, high quality worldwide network of members to provide electrical, mechanical, electronic and specialised services to the marine industry.

Member companies benefit from being part of a global network which enables them to extend their services worldwide and share technical knowledge and co-operation with other members. The ISES Marine Service Guide is produced annually and mailed to over 5,000 ship owners and managers, thus raising members’ profiles by listing their full details, locations and capabilities to potential customers. A copy of the guide is also left on vessels that members are called onboard to service. Through global networking members are able to discuss issues, share information and help resolve problems.

Ship owners who engage the services of an ISES member can be confident that they are utilising the skills of a quality assured service company.

The Association has over 50 members in more than 30 countries, covering over 150 ports, including some not covered by other service networks. Many of the members have experienced engineers who have been trained in a variety of manufacturers products; thus, their expertise is not limited to a single brand. In addition, many have access to different manufacturers' spare parts. There is also co-ordination between members ensuring adequate follow up from port-to-port.

The Mission to seafarers

Founded in 1856, The Mission to Seafarers is a global non-profit organization funded entirely by voluntary donations. Since the beginning we have had one mission; to provide compassion, care, and support to seafarers around the world when they need it most. Currently, The Mission to Seafarers has a presence in 200 ports in 50 different countries worldwide. This makes us the largest port-based welfare organization in the world. We provide support to seafarers 365 days per year, regardless of their rank, nationality, gender, or religion.

The vital, but often invisible, element in the network that makes up the economic system that we depend on are the men and women who sail the ships that keep everything moving. Their lives are stressful and can be dangerous. They contend with isolation, demanding working conditions, and not infrequent personal crises. In an emergency, The Mission to Seafarers is often the only help on offer. No matter what problem a seafarer is facing, globally, they know they can turn to us for help, advice, and support.

In the United Arab Emirates, The Mission to Seafarers has supported the maritime community since 1962 and is a charitable NPO licensed at International Humanitarian City.

Visiting ships, in the various UAE ports, on a weekly basis, creates the opportunity to offer support ranging from counselling, facilitating communication with loved ones at home, providing welfare provisions such as food, water, clothing, toiletries, and medical supplies; and helping to facilitate solutions on justice issues such as being stranded without pay, injured, denied shore leave, abandoned, or shipwrecked.

The UAE branch of The Mission to Seafarers is committed to:

  1. Caring for any seafarer regardless of their rank, nationality, gender, or religion.
  2. Conducting general ship visits on a weekly basis in the various UAE ports.
  3. Where necessary, provide welfare provisions to seafarers onboard, either in the port or the anchorage.
  4. When required, to liaise with port and maritime authorities and other key stakeholders, to assist in finding solutions to justice issues such as stranded without pay, abandonment, or repatriation.

Seafarers are very often victims through no fault of their own. We practically support not only the seafarers who come through the UAE ports but also their families. It is always a joy to play a small part in enabling crews and those whom they love back at home to stay in touch. Our services are free to seafarers, and we always strive to provide holistic care in a professional, confidential, and gentle manner.

Through the work that we do and through our good working relationships with the Federal Maritime Authority and port authorities, we hope to enhance and promote good quality shipping across the UAE ports and improve the well-being of all seafarers.
